Authors of the 20th Century

By Walter M. Rudolph

The victory in the Second World War has given people confidence that the global moral principles revolved around simple and logical things. Having defeated fascism, the main social values kept drifting in the realm of rationality, technological advances, positive changes, development and progress. These beliefs were stemming from the need to rebuild a post-war world. This process has roughly ended in the 50s, and by the 60s ideas dominating society started to change gradually. These changes, continuously influenced by various factors, have lead to the world's drastic transformation. No one would argue that the kind of reality we live in now is totally different from the reality of the post-war era.

In the era of technology changes are rapid. We are so accustomed to those changes, that often we see just the inventions while we do not notice the ideas standing behind them. Likewise the nature of the future changes, which were going to happen, was first spotted by the intelligentsia, who often lived ahead of their time. These are the people of creativity: authors, writers, musicians, philosophers -- in a word all those who influence and shape the world of ideas. Working in synergy, they have given the humankind a set of new ideas, which have changed the world. With their help realization of the current challenges took place and with their help people received me hope.

These were the authors who have determined the mindset of the entire generation, that has taken the blow of the dramatic change; change, which was perceived as chaos at the beginning of the 21 first century. They have turned our attention to the most tormenting questions of the past century; those questions, which the humankind, having gone through the world wars and unseen sufferings, was afraid to face. In the end they were voicing the main question "What will our future look like?"

In this paper we will name several of the most prominent authors of the 20th century. They have all significantly influenced literature of their time, have reflected trends and problems which were typical to their countries and the times they lived in, and have made the audience think about the existing system of values, having them realize that it is far from being perfect. One of the most interesting aspects of their writing is that in most cases they have evoked the readers' interest in books and written matter. In this aspect one of the most interesting success stories is that of a brilliant British author Joan Rowling.

Indeed, the achievements of Joan Rowling are far more than impressive. She has become the world's first author to have earned $1 billion by writing fairy tales. Currently she is spending a large portion of her money on charitable events, including combating poverty and illness. It's notable that the idea for her book has come to her when she was on a train from Manchester to London. He agreed to publish her book and paid her 1500 pounds for it; in addition he has recommended Joanne to find a job. He did not believe that she would be able to become a professional author and to make a living by writing fairy tales. Joann proved him wrong and has given the world a book that is one of the most widely read in the world.

It goes without saying that there are dozens, if not hundreds of authors, whose heritage in the world literature is hard to overestimate. They have written real masterpieces, and their books are loaded with ideas, which influence and shape the conscience of the society. Such authors lived in different places and at different times, however their influence on their societies remains without a doubt immense.
