Is medical writing right for you?

By Greg Baldock

The need for medical writers is constantly growing as more and more clinical trials and researches are being conducted these days. Medical writing is, however, quite different that writing a regular article or ad copy. A medical writer has to use scientific facts and data while presenting a medical claim and that too in a language that is understandable to the target audience.

A medical writer has to go through all the relevant documents such as statistical analyses, internal reports, press releases, etc. given by the client carefully. This is then presented in a single document ensuring that no error is made in reporting any of the scientific findings since this can affect the credibility of the document.

The target audience is definitely one of the most important aspects of a medical writer's job. If the document is being prepared for the layman, the language should be simple and clear so that a health condition, treatment procedure, or drug's effectiveness can be understood easily by the layman. Keep in mind to avoid using medical jargon.

For healthcare professionals and people in the scientific community, medical and technical language will be appropriate. They will be more interested in the dosage administered in a clinical trial of a drug, the extent of its effectiveness, conditions in which it is contraindicated, and the side-effects that it may have.

Don't forget to cite references. It lends credibility to your writing and lets the reader know that you are actually reporting facts taken from relevant clinical researches rather than just stating something on your own. If interested, the reader can check out the references for more facts and information.

As a medical writer, you also need to stay within the regulatory limits set by your particular national or international agencies while making medical claims. The language used should follow the prescribed rule about medical claims in your country or state.

Quick analysis and fast writing are essential to succeed in this job. If this is what is paying your bills, you cannot afford to write one document in two weeks' time. So, make sure to be quick in picking the relevant facts and statistics and then presenting these in a clear language suitable for your target audience.
