How Much Should You Promote Yourself?

By Victoria Thrun

A writer cannot survive without promotion. Your work must be available to the public eye, and people need to have access to samples. Nobody is going to buy a book from someone they never heard of before. Promotion is not just one step in the journey of publishing, but rather it is a vital part of a writer's career.

In the age of the information superhighway known as the internet, there are many opportunities to promote your work. Use different techniques to increase your exposure. Why shouldn't you make the most of the free resources that abound online?

Blogging is a wonderful mean of interacting with readers. You can post different and customized messages on free networks such as Myspace, ning, LiveJournal, Yahoo 360 and Facebook. You can post updates, excerpts, contests and more for your readers. The networks are usually more important to the creation of a fan base than they are to produce hard sales of your book.

Review sites are another great place to go, since you can go there to network, and also to get reviews for your work. Try to secure as many reviews as you possibly can. These sites are often visited by readers on the lookout for a new author or for a new exciting book. Don't feel left out, utilize their services.

MSN and Yahoo offer the opportunity to join groups on just about every topic. You can find a staggering number of groups involved with reading and writing. You can join critique groups, promotion groups, or take part in chats of all kinds. Often you will find that publishers have groups as well. This is a superb way to find other author and publishers to talk to. Some of these groups are very active, and some of them can be mines of information for new and aspiring authors.

Finally don't forget the power of building your own website. Not only can you customize this specifically for you, you can give extensive information about your releases, you and projects you are working on. Often you'll find people in the writing community would like to have your website address. And that's fine, because it provides readers with something they can bookmark. You can start a blog on your page, you can run contests on your page, you can post excerpts of your work. Having a website allow others the chance to connect with you and find out who you are and what you are about.

Your writing success is heavily intertwined with your ability to market yourself. There are lots of different things you can try, which are often free of charge and a lot of fun to engage into. Remember that readers can't find you if they don't know about you. So take it as a job and let people know you exist!
