3 Great Tips For Writing A Successful Resume

By Carole Ashley

Resume writing is possibly the biggest stumbling block for folks who are looking for a job. While it may seem simple, there are a lot of subtle things that really matter. In response to their job postings, potential employers are flooded with resumes and you're only given a few short moments or your resume may end up in the garbage. Any ideas on how to optimize your resume so potential employers will read it? Here are 3 great tips to get you started.

How to Comprehensive but Succinct

While your resume should contain a detailed account of your qualifications and accomplishments, you need to keep on topic specific to the job you are applying for. For instance, when applying for a position as office manager, make sure your references are related or helpful to that particular job. The skills and work experience that relates to the position you're applying for is what the prospective employer would be interested in. Giving them what they're looking for is what you need to do. Take a thorough account of your work history and skill set and choose to highlight what is relevant, and eliminate or downplay the items that are irrelevant. Your resume will be kept focused and you'll also appear as the most qualified candidate with this strategy of niche resume writing.

Format Your Resume Nicely

Don't use kooky fonts for your resume because it should be more standard. You want it to appear as neat and tidy as, well, yourself, right? When writing a resume, a great idea would be typing it on high quality white paper and using standard fonts like Arial and Times New Roman.

Your grammar, spelling, and punctuation are things you should pay attention to. Nothing would be more embarrassing than a resume with typos, grammatical errors, and misspellings. Not only that, your resume may land in the trash can if it's presented with errors because potential employers won't be impressed. Don't rely on computer based spelling and grammar checks. Check it yourself, and if possible, get someone else to check it for you as well. When you upload your resume to an Internet based resume service, you should also be wary of the reformatting that sometimes happens. A lot of times you will lose your careful formatting only to find it replaced with the wrong margin, strange fonts and worse. That's why before sending it, make sure you checked it first.

Make Sure Your Enthusiasm Shows

When you write your resume and cover letter, make sure you don't do it begrudgingly. You must be looking forward to the job you're applying for, aren't you? You need to show it then. Perspective employers will be impressed if your excitement comes across in your cover letter and resume. When it comes to describing your career history and goals, use action words whenever it makes sense to.
