Reading of Books

By Martha Edwards

The term 'book' most commonly refers to the piece of literature. They can take various forms: they can be handwritten, printed, or published in electronic format. The latter version of a book is called an e-book. In science they are often called monographs, which means "mono" - one, and "graph" - write. Such name is used to distinguish them from other kinds of printed matter, because there are also periodicals, newspapers, magazines and journals. Collectively, the array of printed matter is called literature..

Undoubtedly, the technological advance has fueled the rapid growth of literature. The number of books, which were created by various writers, has lead to the process, where their number has grown in the geometric progression over several decades. With supply being increased, the demand also went up. As a result, they became cheaper and accessible, and gained greater popularity with the audience. As of now, estimates show that there are roughly 113000000 unique books in the world, excluding their copies. So it would be a more or less adequate guess, that there are currently around several billion books, written by different authors.

Most often people read for entertainment purposes; when we speak of this type of reading, one cannot find a better kind of book to read than fiction. What attracts most readers in reading is the fact that one can plunge into the imaginary world of fiction. This allows you to create the entire world, to the finest details. Unlike the TV or a movie, where everything has been drawn for you, when reading, you are the one who is creating worlds and universes. This is why book reading is often called far more exciting and interesting than watching it on TV or in a movie theater.

Very often is the contemporary generation referred to as the non-reading generation -or in other words, the generation which does not like to read. While it might not be true that the younger generation is not reading at all, it is a well established fact that the younger generation is not spending as much time reading, as their parents did. Whoever makes such claims is most likely wrong than right, because some technical devices allow us to read directly off of the screen, or view an e-book, or listen to its audio version, or simply view the film which is made based on this or that book. In the end however, there is no doubt that the current generation reads no less than the previous generation did, if not more.
