Knowing Speaking

By Byron Shumay

No matter how much success any of us ever attain in life, none of us can honestly say we made it completely on our own. Everyone will face some conflict and struggle in our lives, and in these times often need some kind of assistance from someone else. There are other times when all is well, but we still could use some words of support to help us stay motivated and on task. These are the exact kinds of circumstances that motivational speakers have trained and practiced to address, affecting positive change in the lives of those that need it.

Beyond simply getting over the fear of speaking in front of an audience, the public speaker must also be effective at getting his message across in a manner that will attract and hold an audience. Once you have combined a willing audience, the proper research, and a good baseline of expertise, you will be one glorious and live-giving performance from completing the task of being an effective public speaker.

Of course, being a motivational speaker means that you must have a motivational story to share with the world, and are capable of doing so through effective speech and communication. All of those tips and strategies from speech class come to play, like proper enunciation and pronunciation, staying away from nonsense fillers like Ah's and Um's, and avoiding hesitations and lengthy pauses. Taking the time to practice your speeches with focus is really the only way to become comfortable with speaking in public, let alone be a great motivational speaker.

Though you will be speaking before groups of people, ranging from just a few to possibly hundreds, it is important for you to have isolated speech practice, maybe in the mirror or with a voice recorder. Besides isolated practicing, asking some friends or family members to be an audience for you will help give you confidence as you lead up to larger audiences full of strangers. Your skills will become more polished, and you will become more confident, the more practice time you invest, especially when practicing before increasingly larger audiences.

Though other kinds of speeches and presentations may be different, motivational speaking requires one to both have an interesting and inspiring message in addition to having the ability to effectively communicate this message in an engaging way. Any weaknesses in your speech-giving ability can be overcome with consistent practice, however, if you do not have an inspiring and uplifting message to share with others, you will not be a successful motivational speaker, regardless of your abilities. Every once in a while you may be tempted to embellish your experiences to greater or lesser degrees, but never forget that your message will be better received when you convey it with honesty and a certain level of openness.

There is something, some experience or insight, in each of our lives that could enrich the life of at least one other person. However, it takes a special and willing individual to make that extra effort and willfully look to improve the lives of others. As a well-versed motivational speaker, you really will be able to do your part to help make the world a better place.
